Big First Half Gives Women's Lax 18-8 Win At St. Bona

OLEAN, N.Y. - A 12-goal first half paved the way for the UMass women's lacrosse team as the Minutewomen defeated St. Bonaventure 18-8 on Saturday afternoon at Marra Field. A total of 11 different players scored goals for UMass (10-1, 3-0 A-10) led by four from Hannah Murphy.
In addition to Murphy's offense output, UMass saw Katie Ott, Holly Turner, Callie Santos and Eileen McDonald each tally a pair of goals. Erika Eipp (2 assists), Nicole Troost (1 assist), Ashley Faulhaber, Maddie Ward (1 assist), Amy Tiernan (1 assist), and Katie Boden each added a goal in the win as well.
St. Bonaventure (1-10, 0-3 A-10) was led by Rachel Peria who had three goals and LeighAnn Staufer who had two. Mikayla Place had a game-high four assists in the loss.
UMass jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play on goals from Eipp, Santos (twice) and Murphy. After a Bonnies goal at 17:25, the Minutewomen responded with three more to build a 7-1 lead.
SBU tacked on another goal at the 11:12 mark of the first half, but UMass responded with a four-goal burst in just over 2 minutes and 30 seconds extending the lead to 11-3.
The Bonnies scored back-to-back goals a minute later, but Murphy closed out the first half scoring with an unassisted marker with 3:46 remaining.
The second half saw more runs with each team trading two-goal spurts over the first 10 minutes of play. The Minutewomen then scored four straight to build an 18-6 lead while holding St. Bona scoreless until the 1:45 mark of the second half. SBU added the final goal of the game on Peria free position shot with 48 seconds remaining.
Defensively, the Minutewomen were led by Kate Farnham who had five caused turnovers, five draw controls and five groundballs. Abby Walker chipped in three caused turnovers and four groundballs as well.
Goalie Rachel Vallarelli saw just under 38 minutes of action giving up five goals while making three saves to earn the win. Leigh Henjes (1 goal, 1 save) and Aileen Kelly (1 save, 2 goals) closed out the balance of the contest.
SBU's Morgan Conroy took the loss in net making 16 saves while allowing 17 goals in just over 56 minutes. Kerrigan Cummings closed out the game making a save while giving up one goal.
UMass held a commanding 53-to-16 shot advantage in the game and won 19-of-28 draw controls. While the Minutewomen forced 24 turnovers (20 caused), they also had 17 miscues in the game.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Wednesday, April 8 in its final non-conference tilt of the year as Vermont visits McGuirk Stadium (3 PM). UMass will return to league play on Sunday, April 12 at Davidson.
In addition to its 31-straight wins in Atlantic 10 regular-season games, UMass has now won 41 consecutive games against A-10 opponents (including tournament games).
