Massachusetts Football Falters At Iowa

Grant Jordan scored his second rushing touchdown of the season
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Massachusetts football fell at Iowa, 47-7, on Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium (69,250).
Grant Jordan earned his first start as Minuteman, completing nine passes and rushing for a touchdown, while AJ Hairston also saw some time at quarterback. Jacquon Gibson had five catches for 37 yards, followed by Donnie Gray with 27 receiving yards on two receptions, including a 22-yard grab.
On the defensive side, Timmy Hinspeter led UMass with eight total tackles (five solo, three assisted) and a sack for a loss of seven yards, marking his first career sack.
Marques White tallied two tackles for loss and David Onuoha and Zukudo Igwenagu each registered a quarterback hurry.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz became Big Ten football's career wins leader with the victory (206).
How It Happened
The Hawkeyes scored on their opening drive with a 20-yard pass from Mark Gronowski to Seth Anderson to complete a three-play, 68-yard drive. After UMass was forced to punt, Iowa added another quick touchdown but missed the point after.
The Hawkeyes added a seven-play, 52-yard drive capped by a Kaden Wetjen 20-yard rushing touchdown, making it 20-0 to end the first quarter.
Kezion Dia-Johnson then blocked an Iowa punt with Zachary Farris recovering the ball for the Minutemen and returning it six yards to Iowa's 27-yard line. On a second-and-six, Grant Jordan scrambled before rushing up the middle for a touchdown to make it 20-7.
The Hawkeyes pulled ahead 23-7 after a 54-yard field goal by Stevens and then after the Minutemen couldn't convert on a fourth down slant pass from Jordan intended for Tyree Kelly, Iowa added another touchdown for a 30-7 halftime lead.
Iowa's Wetjen returned a 59-yard punt for a 95-yard touchdown at the 12:39 mark of the third quarter to make it a 37-7 contest, which they went on to win 47-7.
Notes
- Keegan Andrews, Jacquon Gibson, Rocko Griffin and Jovoni Borbon served as the game captains.
- Kezion Dia-Johnson came away with a blocked punt in the second quarter, marking the first time a Minuteman blocked a punt since Tanner Davis at FAU during the 2020 season.
- Grant Jordan posted a six-yard rushing TD in the second quarter to get the Minutemen on the board, marking his second rushing TD in as many weeks/with UMass and the seventh of his career (now has 29 total career touchdowns).
- It marked the first rushing touchdown Iowa had allowed this season.
- Timmy Hinspeter recorded his first career sack for a loss of seven yards in the second quarter.
