Women’s Soccer Drops 5-2 Match To Western Michigan

Aline Traber and Kayla Nohasiarisoa notch first collegiate goals on the day.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer dropped a 5-2 match to Western Michigan on Thursday evening at the WMU Soccer Complex.

The Minutewomen move to 3-5-2 overall, including 1-3 in the Mid-American conference, while the Broncos improve to 8-2-1 on the year and 4-0-1 in conference play.

Western Michigan pulled ahead, 1-0, early in the game. Heidi Thomasma headed the ball into the net off the corner taken by Drew Martin at the 4:24 mark. The Broncos extended their lead, 2-0, in the 25th minute as Martin one-touched the cross from Abby Baldridge.

In the second half, Madi Canada of Western Michigan made it a 3-0 contest at the 59:07 mark. Meredith Vance added to the Broncos lead in the 61st minute, making it a 4-0 game.

At the 72:59 mark, Aline Traber scored her first career goal on a free kick at the top of the box, sending the ball to the lower left corner of the net. Kayla Nohasiarisoa netted her first collegiate goal in front of the goal from a cross from Sophia Foley at the 79:56 mark to cut the deficit in half, with the Broncos, 4-2.

Western Michigan responded quick with a goal from Abby Werthman at the 80:28 mark to push ahead, 5-2.

Western Michigan outshot Massachusetts, 18-10, with the Broncos edging out the Minutewomen, 8-6, in shots on goal. UMass took three corners, while WMU tallied seven.   

Traber and Nohasiarisoa registered their first career goals on the afternoon, while the pair lead the team in shots with two each. Nohasiarisoa placed both of her shots on goal, as Traber had one on goal. Foley had her first assist of the year and second of her career. Foley was one six Minutewomen to tally one shot.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Leah Nisenfeld made two saves and allowed four goals in 61:41 minutes of action. Freshman Pepper Escher made her collegiate debut in net, stopping one shot and allowing one goal in 28:19 minutes of play.  

UMass continues its road stretch with a trip to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to face Central Michigan on Sunday, October 5, at 1 p.m. on Chippewas All-Access.
