Women’s Soccer Edged By Kent State, 2-1

Morgan Bellamy scored her first penalty kick goal to cut the deficit in half.
KENT, Ohio – University of Massachusetts women's soccer was edged out by Kent State, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Minutewomen move to 3-4-2 overall, including 1-2 in the Mid-American conference, while the Golden Flashes improve to 4-3-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
Kent State got on the board first at the 21:49 mark of the first. Samantha Miller scored an olimpico goal off the corner kick to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Kent State took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute, as Kelsey Salopek sent the ball to the top left of the net. The Minutewomen cut the deficit in half, as Morgan Bellamy capitalized on a penalty kick at the 80:26 mark. After being taken down in the box, Bellamy was awarded a penalty kick. Bellamy sent the ball to the left of the net and passed the Kent State goalkeeper.
Kent State outshot Massachusetts, 12-9, with the Golden Flashes edging out the Minutewomen, 5-4, in shots on goal. UMass had the advantage in corners, 6-5.
Bellamy led the team in shots with three, followed by Kayla Nohasiarisoa with two. Four other Minutewomen recorded a shot on the afternoon.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Leah Nisenfeld played the full 90 minutes in net, allowing two goals and stopping three of the five shots faced. Leah Shaffer of Kent State allowed one goal and made three saves through 90 minutes.
UMass returns to Rudd Field on Sunday, September 28, for a 1 p.m. matchup against Northern Illinois for The Hidden Opponent/Mental Health Awareness game.
