Emily Whelan and Chloe Whittier each drove in a pair of runs while Amy Smith recorded a pair of hits.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team used a five-run fourth inning to guide the Minutewomen to an 8-3 win over Army on Saturday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium. The Minutewomen were led offensively by a pair of RBI from Chloe Whittier and Emily Whelan while Amy Smith added two base hits.
Army took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run before UMass answered right back to tie at 1-1 as Bella Pantoja crossed following an error on a Payge Suggs sacrifice bunt. The Black Knights added another run in the top half of the third to take a 2-1 advantage that held through four and a half innings played.
Whelan gave the Minutewomen their first lead of the day with one out in the bottom of the fourth, sending a two-RBI double to right field to bring in Abby Packard and Sarah Keagy to make it 3-2. Smith followed with one of her two base hits two batters later, singling up the middle to load the bases for Whittier, who came away with a two-out, two-RBi single to bring the score to 6-2.
UMass tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch before answering an Army run in the sixth with one of its own in the bottom half. Suggs led things off with a walk before Whittier's second hit put a pair of runners in scoring position. Keagy followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought in Suggs to make it an 8-3 final.
Julianne Bolton picked up her second win of the season in the circle and moved to a 2-2 record as she threw all seven innings and struck out four.
The Minutewomen wrap up action tomorrow with a pair of games beginning with Ohio State at 1:30 p.m. before taking on host USF at 4 p.m.
