BRONX, N.Y. -- Massachusetts (11-32, 4-15 A-10) was unable to overcome Fordham (25-23, 15-8 A-10) on the road this weekend, surrendering a sweep in doubleheader action on Sunday.
UMass struck early in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, as Brooke Musch, Lily Woodworth, Lydia Castro, and Odyssey Torres each tallied base hits in the top of the opening frame. Musch scored on a passed ball to get on the board first, followed by Katharine Heslin scoring Woodworth on an RBI grounder. Taylor Richardson and Musch would tack on back-to-back doubles to increase the lead to 3-0 in the second inning. The Rams would respond in the sixth inning with an RBI single, cutting the lead to two runs. The deciding bat would be Fordham's Wells, hitting a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the final frame to claim the walk-off victory 4-3.
Massachusetts once-again scored in the opening inning, as Riley Kairer brought Musch home on a sacrifice fly. The Minutewomen would be unable to disrupt the momentum Fordham's bats generated early, scoring runs in the first, second, and fourth innings to take a 7-1 lead into the top of the fifth. Sophia Thormeyer answered for UMass, singling up the middle to score Kairer and cut into the deficit. The Rams extended the lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, closing out the game as Massachusetts fell 9-2.
