Offense Clicks In A-10 Opening Doubleheader Sweep Of La Salle

UMass posted 26 hits while scoring 18 runs in the A-10 series opener against the Explorers.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team opened up Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader sweep of La Salle on Saturday at Sortino Field behind 18 runs and 26 hits across the two games. The Minutewomen (13-10 Overall, 2-0 A-10) shutout the Explorers (7-14 Overall, 0-2 A-10) in a 7-0 win to open up play before picking up an 11-3 win in game two.
 
Game One – UMass 7, La Salle 0 - Box Score
Meg Colleran tossed 5.0 innings of one-hit softball as she moved to 4-4 in the circle on the season, retiring 10 straight batters after a walk in the first inning before surrendering her first and only base hit of the day with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Jackie Kelley drove in the first run of the season at Sortino Field in the top of the second, sending a two-out double to right field to bring in Amy Smith. Kelley finished the game with a team-leading three hits while crossing the plate twice.
 
Jena Cozza followed Kelley's RBI base hit by driving in a pair of runs to put UMass ahead 3-0 with a two-RBI single to center.
 
UMass added two more in the fourth inning on three hits, beginning the inning with a Smith walk and a Kelley single before Erin Stacevicz followed with a RBI single for the fourth run of the afternoon.  Madison Gimpl drove in the second run of the inning on a single through the left side that brought in Kelley and put the Minutewomen ahead 5-0.
 
The Minutewomen tacked on a run in the fifth and seventh inning as Cozza drove in one in the fifth inning while Smith added the seventh on a RBI single in the seventh. Smith finished the first game 2-of-2 at the plate with a pair of walks and a run scored.
 
Kaitlyn Stavinoha added a pair of base hits in the series opener, picking up the first UMass hit in the second inning before adding her second hit in the seventh inning that led to the final run for a team that had 13 hits in the game.
 
Game Two – UMass 11, La Salle 3 - Box Score
The offense kept clicking in the second game of the doubleheader as the Minutewomen posted 13 hits for the second straight game on their way to an 11-3 victory over the Explorers to secure the series win.
 
Stacevicz paced the offense with four hits in five at-bats, driving in a trio of runs while scoring a pair herself from the second spot in the UMass lineup.
 
Stavinoha added three hits for the UMass offense while driving in three, picking up her first RBI of the second contest in the second inning with a single to score a pinch-running Riley Gregoire for the opening run before driving in another in the third inning to put UMass ahead 3-0. Kelley drove in her fourth run of the day on her fourth hit in the second inning to extend the lead to two for the time being.
 
La Salle got a pair of runs back in the third inning on one hit and followed with another in the fourth inning to cut the UMass lead to one run twice.
 
Stacevicz's second RBI of the game extended the UMass lead back to two runs in the fourth inning before the junior's third RBI opened up a five-run sixth inning for the Minutewomen. Madison Gimpl added a pair of runs on a two-RBI single that eventually scored three runs before Stavinoha singled to score Gimpl late in the inning.
 
Cozza brought in another one with her fourth RBI of the day in the seventh inning while Stacevicz followed with her fourth hit and third RBI to bring the score to a final 11-3.
 
Kiara Oliver improved to 7-2 in the circle during her freshman campaign, striking out seven batters with one walk and two hits allowed in the win. Quinn Breidenbach entered the game in relief in the sixth inning, allowing just one hit while striking out four. Breidenbach also entered the first game in the sixth inning on her way to striking out three to close out the series-opening win.
 
The Minutewomen and the Explorers will wrap up the A-10 opening series tomorrow afternoon at noon.
