AMHERST, Mass. - Four of Massachusetts' five seniors were responsible for all five runs and the other took a no-hitter into the final inning as the Minutewomen defeated St. Bonaventure, 5-0, to complete a series sweep at Sortino Field Sunday.
Senior Caroline Raymond (10-12) struck out one and allowed just two hits in the seventh inning as she won her fourth game of the week, which also included a 45-pitch no-hitter at Rhode Island on Tuesday. She retired the first nine batters and faced just two over the minimum, as her defense erased a would-be base stealer and turned a double play for the final two outs.
She got plenty of run support from the two big bats in the UMass lineup - seniors Quianna Diaz-Patterson and Bridget Lemire, both of whom went deep a day earlier and matched that feat on Sunday.
Diaz-Patterson continued her torrid hitting, going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. That was her ninth of the year and raised her batting average to .525.
Lemire meanwhile, gave the Minutewomen a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Diaz-Patterson led off with a bunt single and advanced on a sacrifice, Lemire put no doubt in a ball hit over the wall in left center for her team-leading tenth homer of the season. She has hit nine of those in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
Senior Anna Kelley drove in the fifth run of the contest in the sixth with a double to the wall in the right center that scored pinch runner Caitlyn Hickey from first.
UMass (14-20, 8-9 A-10) won its fourth-consecutive game and completed its busiest week of the season with a 6-1 mark. More importantly, the Minutewomen moved into sixth place in the A-10 standings with two week remaining in the regular-season. The top six teams qualify for the postseason tournament, which will be contested at Sortino Field May 6-9.
St. Bonaventure (9-19, 5-10) had four base runners on the day with seventh-inning singles by Emily McDonough and Katie Sinclair. Josie Borysevicz (8-8) allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout in the losing effort.
UMass is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Boston University on Wednesday before traveling to league-leader Dayton for a three-game set Saturday and Sunday.
