Sixth Inning Rally Lifts UMass Past Boston College, 5-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Massachusetts softball team scored three runs in the sixth inning and got 16 strikeouts from Sara Plourde in a 5-1 come-from-behind win over Boston College at Shea Field Wednesday.
UMass (22-11) extended its win streak to a season-best six games and improved to 11-1 in its last 12. The Minutewomen collected 11 hits, marking the sixth time they have reached double figures this season.
Plourde (20-9) struck out 16 while allowing just one hit in her 27th complete game of the season. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with her team-leading eighth home run on a solo shot in the seventh. She has now gone deep in five-consecutive games with all eight this season in the past 13 contests.
Tiffany Meeks went 2-for-4 with a run and broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a two-out double off the wall in center that scored pinch runner Mikayla Panko from first. Cyndil Matthew had two hits to add to her team-leading total of 13 multi-hit games. She also stole two bases.
Boston College (20-19) got on the board in the first when four batters walked to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
UMass tied the game two innings later when Matthew scored on Quianna Diaz-Patterson's single up the middle. It extended the freshman's hitting streak to a career-long 12 games.
The Minutewomen put the game out of reach with three runs on four hits in the sixth which included the aforementioned Meeks double, followed by a Teea Rogers double and a Lindsey Webster pinch-hit single.
Nicole D'Argento (9-10) went six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits in suffering the loss. Andrea Filler had the lone hit for the Eagles, a single in the third that ended Plourde's streak of hitless innings at 17.1, just one frame shy of her own school record set a year ago.
UMass returns home to open a 10-game homestand on Friday against Saint Joseph's. First pitch at the UMass Softball Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday's game and Sunday's doubleheader with Temple are both slated for Noon starts.
