AMHERST, Mass. - Kyllie Magill drove in the winning run in the eighth inning with UMass' third-straight infield single to complete the 5-4 comeback victory and give UMass softball (22-15, 10-3 A-10) the doubleheader sweep over George Washington (14-24-1, 4-12 A-10) after winning the first game 6-0 on Easter Sunday at the UMass Softball Complex. After a one-hit shutout win by Sara Plourde in game one, the Minutewomen trailed 4-0 in game two, but scored two runs in the sixth and got a two-run home run by Audrey Boutin in the seventh to force extra innings. The Minutewomen have now won 200 games at the UMass Softball Complex since it opened in 2000 (200-18-1, .916).
Down two runs going into the bottom of the seventh in game two, Boutin blasted a towering shot down the right field line to tie the game, 4-4, after Lindsey Webster led off the inning with a single to center. It was the senior's third homer of the season. Meghan Carta followed with a single, but after a sacrifice bunt, the potential winning run was stranded at second base when GW starter Kara Clauss (10-12) got a strikeout and lineout to left to send the game to extra innings.
The Minutewomen started their comeback in the sixth. Boutin singled and Stephanie Mayne walked, setting up a one-out RBI single by Tiffany Meeks. After everyone was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Jordan Storro singled to center to bring in UMass' second run, but Clauss was able to retire the next two batters to leave the bases loaded and GW ahead 4-2.
Storro and Cyndil Matthew led off the eighth inning with infield singles before Magill's game-winner to the diving second baseman drove in the Storro with the winning run.
Magill's hit capped off a big day at the plate for the junior as she was a combined 5-for-7 with a walk, RBI, and two runs scored. Meeks combined to go 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Plourde (20-11) went all eight innings in game two, allowing four runs, all in the second inning, and just one earned, surrendered six hits and struck out 10 with no walks. She allowed just one hit after the third inning. The junior threw a complete-game one-hit shutout in game one, struck out 12 and walked five. It was the junior's 11 shutout of the season.
The Colonials took the early lead in game two with a four-run second inning. A single and an error on a bunt put two on to start the inning, setting up back-to-back RBI hits by Clauss and Sandi Moynihan. After Plourde struck out the next two, Chelsea Lenhart drove in two more with a single right-center. Just one of the four runs was earned.
Meeks went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored in game one to lead the offense. Magill also was 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Carta and Teea Rogers drove in runs.
The Minutewomen benefited from three George Washington errors in the game, scoring all but one of their runs in the innings the miscues occurred.
Rogers and Meeks led off the second with a walk and a single, and after a Storro sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, a throwing error by the shortstop brought in the first two runs of the game.
Meeks made it a 3-0 game in the fourth inning when she blasted the 2-2 pitch deep to right-center for the freshman's fourth home run of the season.
Magill led off the fifth with a single and later scored when Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and UMass made it 6-0 in the sixth with two runs, one on a throwing error by the second baseman, and one on a RBI single by Carta after the inning was extended.
Autumn Taylor had the lone GW hit in game one, a double to lead off the second inning.
The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday when they host Boston University in a 5 p.m. game.
