Student Learning Assistant (SLA)
Student Learning Assistants are undergraduate or graduate students who work closely with student-athletes in the Learning Enhancement Program. The Student Learning Assistant will work directly, in-person, with student-athletes in weekly sessions to provide academic support. This position provides support through academic skill building such as building time management, organization, note taking, reading comprehension, study strategies, and writing skills. Student Learning Assistants believe that all students can learn under favorable conditions, have knowledge of how to create growth mindsets, and have strong interpersonal skills. Student Learning Assistants are empathetic individuals who prioritize students’ perspectives and can use diverse problem-solving techniques to meet student needs
Primary Responsibilities:
- Structure and facilitate individual student learning sessions
- Be familiar with the course syllabus, course assignments and requirements of the classes
- Conduct weekly learning support sessions with designated caseloads of at-risk students to help develop academic skills including time management, reading comprehension, study skills, writing, etc.
- Collaborate with Learning Specialists and/or Academic Counselors to create individualized learning plans
- Adhere to all relevant NCAA Compliance Rules and Regulations
- Maintain weekly or daily communication with the SLA/Tutor Coordinator
- Submit timely online reports for appointments in the EAB Campus System
Other duties:
- Attend and participate in required training conducted by the SLA and Tutor Coordinators
- Attend and participate in regular staff meetings during the semester
- Submit weekly payrolls through HR Direct
Qualifications:
- You must be a UMass student with Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate status
- Must be available for in-person sessions
- Knowledge of basic skills that are applicable to all subject areas i.e. organization, planning, studying, test-taking, essay composition, etc.
- Must be responsible and professional
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
