The Minutewomen look ahead to their regular season finale against Rhode Island on April 19
MANCHESTER, Conn. – University of Massachusetts tennis claimed a 4-3 win over UConn at Magic Lincer Tennis on Wednesday afternoon.
The victory marks the squad's third consecutive victory, improving to 10-6 on the season.
UMass failed to claim the doubles point, with the Huskies winning on both courts No. 1 and No. 2. UConn's duo of Olivia Wright and Victoria Matos bettered Mariana Campino and Belle Jonglertrakul 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, before Isabel Petri Bele and Chloe Lomans of the Huskies won a 6-4 match at No. 2 doubles over Amelia Tye and Ella Faessler to clinch the doubles point. The match on court. 3 went unfinished, with UConn up 5-4.
In singles action, Massachusetts began to mount its comeback with a win at No. 2 singles. Faessler led the momentum with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court No. 2 over the Huskies' Petri Belle, while UConn answered back with a win of its own at No. 6 singles from Asenov defeating Owethu Makhanya 6-2, 6-1. Soon after, the Minutewomen quickly garnered two three-set wins on courts No. 3 and No. 1. Jonglertrakul bested the Huskies' Matos in 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 come-from-behind triumph at No. 3 singles, while Campino won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 atop Wright of UConn on court No. 1.
The Huskies' Cameron Didion added a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win of her own on court No. 4 over Tye, but her efforts proved too little too late. Martina Pavissich cemented UMass' win, with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Lomans at No. 5 singles to make it a 4-3 decision on the day.
