Minutewomen Earn Sixth Shutout Win, Defeat Longwood 5-0

AMHERST, Mass -- No. 16 Massachusetts (11-2, 4-1 MAC) claimed a Friday evening clash, 5-0, over Longwood (3-9, 1-4 MAC) on Friday at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The Minutewomen secured their sixth shutout of the season, good for second nationally and first in the Mid-American Conference. 
 
Massachusetts earned its first victory over the Lancers in the inaugural meeting between the two programs. 
 
Freshman Emily Barrett recorded her third brace of the season, increasing her team-leading goal total to seven. Megan Carpenter opened the scoring in the matchup, notching her first career goal. Elena Clococeanu and Lina Kroeger each recorded a goal in the matchup as well, with both tallies coming off of penalty corners.  
 
Grad Student Elena Clococeanu notched her sixth defensive save of the season, securing the national lead in the category. Myrte van Herwijnen made one save on the afternoon, facing four shots. 
 
The Lancers were led by goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk who made 10 saves.  
   
Breaking Down The Action 
  • Massachusetts recorded 10 shots and seven penalty corners in the opening quarter, but the score remained 0-0 after 15 minutes. 
  • Megan Carpenter broke the ice for Massachusetts, sending a ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 with 13:31 left in the second quarter. 
  • Lina Kroeger doubled the UMass lead, firing a drag flick past the Longwood keeper with 2:42 remaining in the first half.
