Minutewomen Drop Pair On Opening Day Of Cardinal Invitational

UMass resumes play tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET against host Incarnate Word.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday at the Cardinal Classic at H-E-B Field. The Minutewomen resume action tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET against host Incarnate Word.
Game 1 – Boise State 10, UMass 0
The Minutewomen fell to the Broncos 10-0 in the opening game of the afternoon. Boise State got on the board in the top half of the second inning with back-to-back hits to score the game's first run before plating two more on a Bella Rocco two-run home run in the third to go ahead 3-0.
The Broncos added three runs on three hits in the fourth inning and scored four across the final two frames to make it a 10-0 contest.
Bella Pantoja, Amy Smith and Abby Packard each had hits for the Minutewomen in game one. Jessie DiPasquale started and tossed 3.1 innings while striking out five batters before Jenna Bradley entered for the remaining 3.2 innings.
Game 2 – UTSA 13, UMass 2 (5 inn.)
UTSA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings on their way to a X-X win over UMass. Kali Puppolo made her first appearance of the year in relief in the third inning, settling in to retire four batters in a row after surrendering a walk to her first batter.
The Roadrunners added their sixth run of the game in the top of the fourth before a Puppolo strikeout ended the inning with two runners stranded in scoring position.
Abby Lamson opened the scoring for the Minutewomen in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double to right field. Jules Shields followed with a RBI single to left field to score a pinch-running Taylor Richardson to make the score 6-2.
UTSA answered by plating seven runs on three hits and an error in the top half of the fifth to bring the score to a final.
Pantoja added a double in the bottom half of the fifth for her second hit of the day.
The Minutewomen resume action at the Cardinal Invitational tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET against host Incarnate Word.
