Three UMass Teams Earn APR Recognition from NCAA
April 13, 2016 | General
AMHERST, Mass. - Three University of Massachusetts athletic programs have been honored with NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, the organization announced on Wednesday.
UMass men's track and field, women's cross country and women’s lacrosse all earned the distinction.
To be recognized, a program must rank in the top 10 percent within its sport nationally according to overall team academic performance during a four-year period. The current period released ended with 2014-15.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester.
Overall, 1,071 teams received the APR award, including 649 women's and 422 men's or mixed squads. Full APR data on all NCAA Division I programs will be released on Wednesday, April 20.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 944 teams.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
