September 15, 2025 | Field Hockey, General, Athletics Department
AMHERST, Mass.--Â Massachusetts Field Hockey players Emily Barrett and Myrte Van Herwijnen have each been dubbed UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMass Five College Credit Union.Â
Freshman Emily Barrett opened the scoring in Massachusetts' 2-1 (3-1) shootout win versus no.4 Boston College, deflecting an assist from Neva Eisenga passed the goalkeeper. The Sevenoaks, England native also converted Massachusetts' first penalty shootout attempt, lifting the ball over the BC keeper in a spectacular display, which made ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the day. Barrett leads the Minutewomen with five goals through six games this season.
Senior goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen continued to lead the defensive effort for the Minutewomen, anchoring to them their shootout win against the Eagles. Van Herwijnen recorded eight saves in the contest, including five in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Huizen, the Netherlands native stopped three penalty shootout attempts for the second time in three games, proving to be a dominant force with the game on the line.Â
The Minutewomen return to Amherst, facing Kent State for their MAC opener on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and can be followed live on umassathletics.com or UMassFH on Twitter. Â
