AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass football team held a scrimmage on Saturday morning. It was a chance for the Minutemen to go through live action with officials in a controlled environment. The team continues its preparation for the season opener against No. 4 William & Mary on Sept. 4 in Amherst. Check out a photo gallery and post-scrimmage video here on UMassAthletics.com.

Morris gave his general thoughts on the scrimmage which was closed to the general public.

"We came out healthy, which is great. We want to play fast and we had to get some live tackling in, and we did. We had some good hits out there. It was very lively on both sides.

"On defense, we did real well. We don't do a lot of live tackling during the course of the preseason because of the injury factors. ... We had a lot of good clean tackles. If a (runner) got four yards that was all he got. It wasn't four, to eight, to 10 with some missed tackles. It was a really good job by the defense. The linebackers with Tyler Holmes, Mike Mele and Perry McIntyre were solid. The defensive line, which has been banged up, performed well and the defensive backs weren't tested much but made some nice plays.

"On offense, we made some good plays, had some good runs and some good passes. We had a couple of penalties that marred the offense and brought some big drives back. In terms of running the football, John Griffin and Jonathan Hernandez looked good. Rob Blanchflower and Tom Gilson made some nice plays on the receiving end."
