DURHAM, N.H. - It was a day of qualifiers and school records for the UMass men's track and field team on Saturday afternoon. The un-scored meet was held at the University of New Hampshire, a week before the Minutemen come home to host the A-10 Championships. Coach O'Brien and his staff added an impressive seven championship qualifiers for the New England's and IC4A's combined.
Jumping high, while setting the best mark in school history in the event was senior Brian Miller. In the high jump, he soared to a height of 6-08.25. Also not failing to impress was Sean Busch in the pole vault as he fell right behind Miller in terms of school records. The junior set the second best height ever in the event at 15-09.00. The impressive marks qualified both competitors for the IC4A Championships, while capturing first place in their respective events.
Back in action on Saturday after an outstanding indoor season, was Tyler Cotto in the 110 meter hurdles. Not only did he qualify for the New England and IC4A Championships in his first outdoor meet, but also set the fourth best time in school history in the event, crossing the line at 14.51.
The freshman and senior duo of Jason Dwyer and Nick Otis in the 400 meter hurdles was a string of luck for UMass. The duo placed consecutively in fourth and fifth place, while finishing with times of 55.85 and 55.87 respectively. Both marks were good enough to qualify for the New England Championships.
In continuation of competing just about every week, was Daniel Wu in the long jump. The sophomore finally reached a New England qualifying mark with a distance of 22-08.00. The mark was good enough to share second place with teammate Zachary Koncki, who previously qualified for the New England Meet in the event. Sophomore sensation, Evan Donadt also improved his previous New England qualifying time in the 110 hurdles, crossing the line at 15.49.
Non-qualifying performers, who were quite solid for the Minutemen included Jason Ayr, Joe Doyle, and Paul Grafov. The trio all captured first place in their respective events (5,000 meter run, 800 meter run, 400 meter dash).
The Minutemen will be back in action this coming weekend, May 1 and 2, as the team prepares to host the heavily important and anticipated Atlantic 10 Championships. Live audio and video coverage of the meet will be provided through UMass All-Access, which can be found by logging onto UMassAthletics.com
