Women's Lacrosse Falls At Albany, 14-7

ALBANY, N.Y. - Taylor Frink and Melanie Sosnowski combined for seven goals to lead Albany over the UMass women's lacrosse team 14-7 Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes (4-1) went up 6-1 in the opening 20 minutes of the first half and never looked back for their first win against Massachusetts in program history. The Minutewomen (3-6) received goals from seven different scorers, while Katie Florence made 12 saves in goal.
UMass Lacrosse will look to stop its two-game skid next Friday in its Atlantic 10 opener at George Washington at 4 PM.
Albany outshot the Minutewomen 31-18, including a 15-7 edge in the first half to put the Great Danes up 8-3 after the first 30 minutes of play. UMass converted on three of its seven free position chances, with goals coming from Merritt Cosgrove, Danielle Pelletier and Stephanie Hopkins, while limiting Albany to just 1-of-6 free position opportunities.
The teams combined for a total of six yellow cards, all coming in the first half, with four whistled on the Minutewomen.
After Albany jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the opening half, Jesse O'Donnell cut the lead to one with her team-leading 20th goal of the season. That, however, sparked a four-goal run from the Great Danes over the next 17 minutes of play.
Massachusetts cut the Albany lead to four with back-to-back goals from Pelletier and Jackie Lyons to make it 9-5 with 17:51 left in regulation, but the Minutewomen couldn't claw its way back into the game as the Great Danes pulled away with five goals over the final 13 minutes of the half.
