Syracuse Too Much For Minutewomen, 6-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The UMass women's tennis team had a tough match Friday against the undefeated Syracuse Orange, falling by a 6-1 final. Play started with Syracuse sweeping in doubles to take the first point of the match. Syracuse continued to play strong, winning five of the six singles, to hand UMass (4-2) its largest defeat of the season. The Orange are now 7-0 on the season.
At No.1 doubles the team of Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse fought hard but were unable to pull out a win, losing 8-4. Magdalena Ploch and Kaitlyn Carpenter had a well-played match at the No. 3 spot, forcing Syracuse to a tiebreaker that favored the Orange 7-5.
Boney lead the team at the No. 1 singles position, but was defeated by Simone Harman, 6-3, 6-1. Carpenter held the only singles victory for the Minutewomen, taking down the previously undefeated Alessondra Parra, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 (third set tiebreak). Carpenter improves her singles record to 4-3 for the season in dual matches.
UMass continues play in Syracuse on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., taking on the Iowa State Cyclones.
