August 13, 2025 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has announced that senior defensemen Owen Murray and Lucas Olvestad will serve as team captains for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
"Over my time as head coach at UMass I have found that one of the most critical pieces to winning is the leadership of our team," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Therefore, I am excited to announce that senior defensemen Owen Murray and Lucas Olvestad have been chosen to lead this year's team on and off the ice. Owen and Lucas were instrumental pieces of our success last season and I believe that their qualified leadership will play a big role in our success this year. Both young men play the game with passion and selflessness, both are vocal leaders on the ice and supportive teammates off the ice. They play the game to the UMass standard, and I am personally looking forward to working closely with them."
Murray is coming off a career high in games played last season in 2024-25, seeing action in all 40 contests and logging 14 points on five goals and nine assists, all career highs, as well. The Decker, Manitoba, native was +4 and led UMass in blocks with 49. For his career, he has appeared in 92 games thus far and has compiled 26 points on eight goals and 18 assists.
Olvestad joined the Minutemen last year as a junior after playing two seasons at Denver where he won a national championship with the Pioneers in 2024. In his first campaign in Amherst, he put up a career-best 20 points on four goals and 16 assists over 38 games and was +7. For his collegiate career, the Stockholm, Sweden native has seen action in 93 games over three seasons and has totaled 30 points on five goals and 25 assists.
UMass is set to open its season on Saturday, October 4, against Northern Michigan at home at the Mullins Center.
