Massachusetts Baseball Drops Game One To VCU, 16-1

Massachusetts and VCU face off on Friday for game two at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
UMass moved to 14-32-1 overall on the season, including 7-21 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU improved to 15-37 overall and 8-20 in the league.
Carter Hanson recorded two hits on the day with Matt Travisano, Gill Dolan, Jack Beverly, Michael Toth and Mitchell Schroeder tallying one hit each. Beverly registered a double, while Dolan had his first collegiate hit. Hanson scored the lone run for the Minutemen as Beverly contributed the RBI.
VCU took an early 4-0 lead in the opening frame, highlighted by a two-run home run. The Rams extended its lead, 7-0, in the fifth with a solo homer and a two-run long ball.
Massachusetts got on the board in the sixth to make it a 7-1 game. Hanson reached first on a fielder's choice , before Beverly doubled down the left field line, driving home Hanson.
VCU tacked on nine more runs in the eighth to take a 16-1 lead. The Rams were able to hold off the Minutemen in the ninth to come away with a 16-1 win.
Robbie O'Connor (2-9) had the loss for the Minutemen, pitching 4.1 innings with seven runs on 10 hits, six walks and no strikeouts. Max Moore (2-3) picked up the win for the Rams, allowing one run on four hits, walking four and striking out six in seven innings of work.
