Massachusetts Baseball Falls To VCU, 13-7, In Game Two

Hanson registered his seventh home run of the season in the loss.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to VCU, 13-7, at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon in game two of the series.

UMass moved  to 14-33-1 overall on the season, including 7-22 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU improved to 16-37 overall and 9-20 in the league.

Anthony Tirado led the team in hits with three, including two doubles, while adding a run. Matt Travisano totaled two hits, as Carter Hanson, Marc Willi, Gavin O'Brien, Michael Toth and Zack Zaetta all had one. Hanson recorded his seventh homer of the year on the day. Seven Minutemen scored on the afternoon, with Hanson tallying a team-high two RBI. Travisano, Toth, Zaetta and Jared Muñoz contributed one each.

Massachusetts took a 1-0 lead in the first. Tirado led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a single to center field from Travisano. Hanson flew out to left field, as Tirado tagged up and headed home to put the Minutemen on the board.

VCU knotted up the game at one apiece in the third, before taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.  The Rams pulled ahead 6-1, highlighted by a lead off solo home run and a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.

The Minutemen added a run on a bases loaded error in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-2 contest. Hanson cut the deficit in half with a solo homer run, marking his seventh of the season, in the seventh to bring the game to a 6-3 score.

The Rams put up a seven spot in the eighth, which included a grand slam, to lead 13-3.

UMass tallied four runs in the bottom half of the eighth to make it a 13-7 contest. Both teams held each other from scoring in the final frame, but VCU came away with the 13-7 victory.

Sam Belliveau (1-6) had the loss for UMass, tossing 5.2 innings with six runs, seven hits, a walk and four strikeouts on the afternoon. Owen Tappy (5-2) had the win for VCU, going seven complete innings with three runs allowed on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

Massachusetts and VCU face off in the series finale on Saturday, May 17, at 12 p.m. on ESPN+ for Senior Day.
