#17 Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker To Brown, 8-7

March 22, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 17 University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as a last second goal by Brown gave the Bears a 8-7 victory over UMass at Garber Field. With the loss, the Gorillas sit at 7-2 on the season, while Brown improves to 3-5.

Junior Aiden Drunsic led the UMass offense with a hat trick and senior Trace Hogan dished three assists. Freshman Robbie Granara netted two, while Michael Finnerty and Brady Hoff rounded out the goal scorers with Hoff collecting his first career tally.

For the Bears, Jeremy Hopsicker led the charge, posting a hat trick and Marcus Werthheim had three points on two goals and an assist.

Brown broke up a scoreless deadlock late in the first with Brady O'Kane connecting with an unassisted tally at the 3:31 mark. Drunsic put UMass on the board with 38 seconds to play in the quarter, but the Bears went back in front with a buzzer beater from Wells Bligh to take a 2-1 lead.

Brown opened up the second with a tally from faceoff specialist Dash Sachs to take its largest lead of the day with 14:55 on the clock. The Gorillas then went on a 3-0 run to climb on top for the first time, 4-3, before the Bears responded with a pair to regain the advantage, 5-4 with 5:10 to go in the half.

UMass then closed out the period with tallies from Hoff and Drunsic to head into the intermission up 6-5. Granara provided the only goal of the third quarter for either side as the Gorillas went into the final 15 minutes with a 7-5 lead.

Wertham brought Brown back to within one with 8:59 remaining in the fourth. The Bears then converted on a two-man advantage at the 6:03 mark to knot things up at 7-7.

Samari Staten was assessed a tripping penalty with 1:21 left to put UMass on a one-minute extra man opportunity, but Bears' goalkeeper Connor Foley was there to shut the door on Hogan.

With the potential of overtime looming, Hopsicker knocked in a loose ball in front of the Gorillas' cage with just 8 seconds left for the deciding tally.

Brown ended the contest with a 35-28 advantage in shots and led UMass in ground balls, 32-28. The Bears went 1-for-4 on extra man opportunities and the Gorillas were 0-for-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Owen Salanger finished with 16 saves and five ground balls for UMass and Foley turned aside 13 for Brown.

The Gorillas will return to action next Saturday, March 29, when the squad will begin Atlantic 10 play at No. 19 Saint Joseph's at 12 p.m.
