Massachusetts rowing team put together a strong performance at Sunday’s Knecht Cup
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Massachusetts rowing team put together a strong performance at Sunday's Knecht Cup, with the Varsity Four earning a gold medal and the Second Varsity 8 capturing silver. Â
The event, which was shortened from two days to one due to weather conditions, took place at the Cooper River.Â
"After a consistent week of training back home, we were excited to get back out there this weekend on the Cooper river to test out our speed against a field of 26 crews in the V8, JV8 and V4," head coach Eric Carcich said. "Our patience was tested after high winds shut down all racing on Saturday. This condensed racing down to one race Sunday morning where winning meant you got to move onto the six-boat finals in the NCAA boatings. The Varsity 4 truly set the tone for the day winning their heat while posting the fastest fours time of the day. They backed it up with an impressive going away victory in the final, it was a really great effort and an impressive win over a huge field! The JV8 followed suit after winning their morning heat by posting the fifth-fastest time of the 26-boat field. We were so impressed with this group's confidence in one another as they went on to earn a silver medal in the grand final! The V8 had a better race today and this group is starting to put the pieces together for a fast end to the season. I am confident they will get it right when it matters. Back at it Tuesday morning ... can't wait!"
The Varsity Four finished first in its morning heat (7:38.97) and then posted a 7:39.00 to win the final, beating out Jacksonville, Georgetown, Delaware, Lafayette and Marist.Â
The Second Varsity 8 also captured its morning heat (7:01.34) before placing second in the final (6:58.29), which was only behind MIT (6:54.79). Â
