Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Towson, 18-10 In CAA Semifinals

The Gorillas end the 2022 campaign with a record of 8-6.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trailed Towson by one through 30 minutes of action, but the Tigers came out of the intermission and scored the next six straight to help pull away from UMass, 18-10 in the CAA Semifinals at Vidas Field on Thursday night. With the loss, the Gorillas end the season at 8-6, while Towson moves on to the CAA Championship game with a record of 7-8.
Logan Liljeberg and Kevin Tobin each registered four points on two goals and two assists and had a caused turnover for the Maroon & White, while Aidan Kaminska posted the second hat trick of his career. Caleb Hammett won 19 of 31 faceoffs and collected 10 groundballs.
Gabriel Procyk and Tobin helped UMass to a 2-1 lead midway through the first before Towson rattled off five straight to end the quarter with a 6-2 advantage.
Liljeberg and Carter Castillo started off the second with tallies at 13:44 and 10:47 to bring the Gorillas back within two. The squads then traded goals twice before UMass closed the half with scores from Kaminska and Liljeberg to come within striking distance of Towson at 8-7.
However, a pair of man-up tallies to start the second half gave the Tigers the momentum to outscore UMass 6-0 in the third and take a seven-goal advantage into the final 15.
Towson out-shot the Gorillas 53-36 overall on the night and led 33-18 in shots on goal. Matt Knote logged 15 saves for UMass and Shane Brennan had seven stops for the Tigers before being relieved by Evan Long who registered one save. Towson went 3-for-6 in extra man opportunities, while Massachusetts was 2-for-7.
Nick DeMaio paced the Tigers with seven points on five goals and two assists, Kyle Berkeley contributed four points with a hat trick and an assist and Luke Shilling (3a) and James Avanzato (2g, 1a) chipped in with three points apiece.
