Men’s Track and Field Takes Third in A-10 Championships

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field picked up five medals on the final day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the UMass Track & Field Complex to help the squad claim third in the team standings with 123 points. Rhode Island took home the team title with 201.5 points, followed by George Mason (193 points), while Saint Louis was a distant fourth behind the Minutemen with 75 points.
 
Senior Kris Horn repeated as Atlantic 10 decathlon champion, setting a meet, facility and program record with a score of 7,295 points after placing second in discus (691 points) and javelin (618 points) and third in 110 meter hurdles (774 points), pole vault (631 points) and 1,500 meter run (655 points) on day two. Sophomore Jonathan Collins captured silver in the event with 6,637 points, which ranks second all-time in program history. Collins' score was bolstered by 703 points in 110 meter hurdles and 659 points in pole vault on day two. Freshman Hunter Gray scored in the event for the Minutemen, as well, in fifth with 6,381 points.
 
Senior Brett Davies became UMass' first A-10 champion in discus since 2000 with a winning toss of 148 feet, 8 inches, while junior Evan Burton took fourth at 144 feet, 4 inches. Davies and Burton also landed in the top-eight in shot put with Davies capturing fourth with a mark of 50 feet 1.75 inches, followed by Burton's fifth-place throw of 49 feet, 7 inches, while senior Adam Bonfilio was sixth at 49 feet .25 inches.
 
Rounding out UMass' scorers in the field on day two, senior Dana Pagliuca was fourth in triple jump with a leap of 48 feet, .75 inches.
 
Sophomore Zachary Frahlich earned a bronze medal in the 1,500 meter run as the Minutemen's top performer on the track with a time of 3 minutes, 50.18 seconds. Sophomore Jake DeGrace and freshman Noah Kortkamp scored in 110 meter hurdles, taking seventh and eighth with times of 15.23 seconds and 15.30 seconds, respectively.
 
All three of UMass' relays landed scoring performances, highlighted by the 4x800 team of Frahlich, senior Alexander Finestone, freshman Nicholas Santos and sophomore Brian Gendron that captured bronze with a time of 7 minutes, 34.88 seconds. Freshman Hayden Gray, senior Deion Arneaud, sophomore Connor Williams and sophomore Andrew Hanwell teamed for a fourth-place time of 42.55 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay. UMass' 4x400 meter relay, comprised of Hanwell, freshman Kevin Shannon, freshman Jacob Gore and DeGrace, combined to run 3:19.12, good for eighth.
 
Select Minutemen who have qualified for the IC4A Championships will be back in action next weekend, May 13-14, in Princeton, New Jersey.
