Swiszcz Pushes Tennis Past Temple, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA , Pa. - The UMass women's tennis team defeated the Temple Owls, 4-3, in Philadelphia this Friday afternoon in a closely contested bout that came down to the final singles match of the day. With the match tied 3-3 heading into No. 5 singles, junior Chantal Swiszcz propelled the Minutewomen to the victory with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Temple's Maame Ama Osei. The victory pushes UMass to 2-4 overall (1-1 A-10) and marked the first in-conference win of the season.
UMass started the day with an important point from the doubles portion of the match. At first doubles, Yuliana Motyl and Swiszcz defeated Temple's top pairing of Yana Mavrina and Paola Calderon, 8-4. Then sealing the doubles point for the Minutewomen was the pairing of Sonia Bokhari and Hazuki Onaga. The duo recorded their first doubles win of the season by taking down Jordan Batey and Carly Bohman, 8-6.
Joining Swiszcz in the singles win column were Bokhari and Chanel Glasper. Bokhari topped Batey in three sets from the second singles spot, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Glasper was able to defeat Rebecca Breland, 6-1, 6-4, and has now won five out of her last six singles matches.
Judy Dixon's squad will look to build upon their win over the Owls tomorrow against Saint Joseph's in a 7:30 p.m. nightcap in Philadelphia.
