Charlotte, N.C. - The UMass men's track and field team competed at the Atlantic 10 Championship for a tenth place finish of 11 teams with a total of 29.50 points. The top performers came from the decathlon, as sophomore Daniel Schwartz finished third overall with 5883 points and sophomore Chris Dzidek ranked seventh with a score of 5426. Schwartz ranked third in both the 400 meter run (51.02) and the 1500 meter run (4:33.83) and was consistently in the middle of the pack. Dzidek, however, had up and down results, as he finished first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.00 as well as second in the pole vault with a height of 12-30.50, yet tenth in the 1500 meter run.

On day one, freshman Zach Koncki (Northampton, Mass.) qualified for day two in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.21 and an eighth place ranking in his heat. On day two, he finished eighth in the finals with a time of 15.17. In the long jump he finished seventh with a 6.92m jump.

The distance runners proved to be dominant once again, as Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) finished in 31:05.31 for an eighth place finish in the 10K. Junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) ranked 11th with a time of 31:28.21, while David Johnson placed 12th with a time of 31:29.54. In the 5K, junior Jonathan Pierce ranked eighth with a time of 15:04.24, while junior Nicolai Naranjo and Andrew Mulvaney came in 10th and 11th respectively. Naranjo crossed in 15:10.15 and Mulvaney finished in 15:22.36.

In the field, sophomore Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) ranked third in the pole vault with a height of 14-03.25. Junior Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.) finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.99 meter (6-06.25). Freshman David McKenna and junior Chris Vercollone both finished ninth, McKenna in the discus (42.95) and Vercollone in the javelin (53.71m).

Sophomore Sean Duncan ranked sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:09.54. Junior Sonny Gamble crossed in 9:16.55 for a eighth place finish.

In the 800, Ryan DiOrio took seventh with a time of 1:53.02, as Scott VanderMolen ranked 12th, posting a time of 1:53.53. Junior Jason Dwyer ranked ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.96.

In the relays, Pete Fortunato, Scott VanderMolen, Zach Gordon, and Ryan DiOrio finished ninth in the 4X8, crossing in 7:43.73.

The Minutemen return to action next week at home for the New England Championships on Friday.
