PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UMass women's tennis team took both of the matches in their two-game road trip this weekend closing the weekend out against Temple. The Minutewomen (9-9, 3-0 Atlantic 10) split the singles matches on the day with the Owls (12-4, 0-1 A10) but it was the Minutewomen's strong doubles play that helped them garner the victory. The game was a rematch of sorts for UMass as Temple ended their postseason run last year defeating UMass in the Semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
No. 1 doubles pair of Masha Pozar (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Candynce Boney (Las Vegas, Nev.) continued on a five-game doubles win streak with their 8-3 thrashing of their Owls opponents. The Minutewomen lost the No. 2 doubles match but bounced back taking the match from the third flight as Laura Danai (Holyoke, Mass.) and Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada) continued to dominate in their doubles game winning the last seven of eight doubles matches. The pair has won 12 doubles matches this season.
The Minutewomen split their singles matches with Temple with the wins coming from the second, third and fifth flights. Boney defeated her No. 2 doubles foe 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets. Meanwhile Kaitlyn Carpenter (Alburtis, Pa.) easily managed to take her singles point as her opponent from the third flight retired in the first set while Carpenter was ahead 4-1. Lecluyse also won her singles match on the day defeating her counterpart, 6-3, 7-5. Danai snapped her seven-game singles win streak today as she fell in the third set after a hard fought battle, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
The Minutewomen are back in action vs. Quinnipiac, April 9 at 3:00 p.m. on the new outdoor courts weather permitting. Before the match, the Minutewomen will partake in Senior Day festivities so come out early.
