Men's Lacrosse Falls to #3 Loyola 21-10

BALTIMORE, Md.. -- Junior midfielder Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.) scored a career-high three goals, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-10 loss against third-ranked Loyola. UMass falls to 4-5 overall on the season, while Loyola now stands 8-1.
Loyola jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, before the Minutemen scored two goals late in the first period to tie up the score at 2-2. Junior attackman John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) scored the first UMass goal off a feed from junior midfielder Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.), then junior midfielder Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) even the score on a pass from Madigan. The Minutemen a one goal lead on three occasions during the second quarter, only to see the Greyhounds come back and tie the score each time. Madigan, senior attackman Mike Janowicz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and freshman attackman Kevin Levielle (Delmar, N.Y.) all scored for UMass during the quarter, with Gabrielli totaling two assists and Guski one.
Loyola came out on fire at the start of the second half, scoring four goals in the first two minutes and outscoring the Minutemen 8-3 in the third period. Racioppi scored all three of his goals during the quarter, with Janowicz and Leveille both recording assists. The Greyhounds stayed hot in the fourth quarter, outscoring UMass 8-2. Gabrielli and Levielle scored the only goals for the Minutemen, with Gabrielli and junior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) recording assists.
Gabrielli finished the game with a career-best four assists and one goal, while both Madigan and Levielle totaled two goals and an assist. Senior attackman Tim Goettelmann led Loyola with four goals and one assist, with junior midfielder Gavin Prout scoring four goals. Junior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made 11 saves in net for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 19, when they play host to 15th-ranked Harvard in a 3:00 p.m. game at Richard F. Garber Field.
