UMass Secures Third A-10 Sweep, Downs Hawks 8-4

The win marked the 10th consecutive victory for the Minutewomen, giving them their best start through 30 games since 2010.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team secured their third straight sweep of an Atlantic 10 opponent as they defeated Saint Joseph's 8-4 on Sunday afternoon to secure their best mark through the first 30 games of a season since 2010. The Minutewomen (20-10 Overall, 9-0 A-10) have won their last 10 games, batting .389 as a team while outscoring their opponents by 70 runs.
Saint Joseph's (13-18 Overall, 2-7 A-10) scored first to take their only lead of the series in the opening half inning two hits, going ahead 1-0 on a Lauren Reilly single to right field.
Kiara Oliver went on to retire eight straight Saint Joseph's hitters after surrendering the RBI single in the first on her way to finishing with four strikeouts before being relieved by Meg Colleran with no outs in the sixth inning with a runner on. Colleran allowed no runs and picked up a strikeout in her two innings of work while Oliver was credited with the win to move to 11-2 in her freshman campaign.
Kaycee Carbone led the way for the UMass offense on the afternoon with two hits and four RBI, driving in her first pair of runs on a full count in the bottom of the first to put the MInutewomen ahead 2-1. Carbone's two-RBI double to left center field drove in Jena Cozza and Erin Stacevicz with no outs in the frame.
UMass took advantage of four straight free passes with one out in the second on their way to tacking on two more runs, beginning with a Stacevicz bases-loaded walk to bring in Hannah Bunker before Carbone's third RBI of the day came by way of a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Jackie Kelley to give the Minutewomen a 4-1 advantage.
After Kelley scored for the second time in the game on an error in the fourth, Carbone picked up her fourth and final RBI of the contest by scoring a pinch-running Riley Gregoire to push the lead to five runs. Madison Gimpl put the Minutewomen ahead by seven runs the following at-bat, sending a two-RBI double to left center field that brought the score to 8-1.
The Hawks added three straight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, bringing in two in the fifth with a pair of RBI singles followed by another in the sixth that trimmed the UMass lead to four at 8-4. Colleran halted the Saint Joseph's momentum in the sixth, picking up two straight outs with the bases loaded to hold the visitors to just one run in the frame.
UMass will play six games in the coming week, beginning the stretch with a game at Boston College on Tuesday before eventually returning home to Sortino Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against Saint Louis.
