Amy Smith led the way offensively with a pair of hits while Jena Cozza added one with two free passes.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped their midweek contest on the road at Boston College 3-0 on a cold and rainy-day Tuesday afternoon. The Minutewomen (20-11 Overall) were led offensively by Amy Smith's two hits at the plate while Jena Cozza added a base hit and a pair of walks.
Smith's first hit of the day was the second for UMass in the game as the freshman found a gap in left field to a two-out single in the fourth. Smith added her second hit of the afternoon with two-outs in the sixth inning ton put a pair of UMass runners on that were eventually left stranded.
Cozza picked up an infield single to open up play in the first inning before reaching two more time on a pair of hit-by-pitches, marking the 18th time that Cozza has been hit by a pitch this season. The mark broke the previous UMass single-season hit-by-pitch mark previously held by Scooter Wheeler (2001).
Boston College (20-15 Overall) put a run on the board in the first before adding two in the third, going ahead 1-0 early after a pop fly dropped between a pair of Minutewomen to bring home a score. The Eagles extended their lead to three runs with a pair in the third, bringing in two unearned runs to go up 3-0 heading into the fourth frame.
Kiara Oliver surrendered just one earned run while striking out six in six innings of work with five hits allowed. Oliver's six strikeouts helped the freshman eclipse the 100-strikeout mark for the season with 104 during her freshman campaign.
The Minutewomen are back in action Thursday for a road doubleheader at Marist with the first game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
