Softball Shuts Out Saint Louis To Remain Unbeaten In A-10 Play

The Minutewomen held the Billikens without a run on their way to a doubleheader sweep.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team held Saint Louis without a run as they improved to 11-0 in Atlantic 10 play with a pair of victories over the Billikens on Saturday afternoon at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (22-10 Overall, 11-0 Atlantic 10) racked up double-digit hits in both wins, marking the seventh time in eight home games that UMass has accomplished the feat while eight different batters recorded a base hit in the doubleheader.
Game One – UMass 10, Saint Louis 0 (5 innings) - Box Score
Jena Cozza led the way offensively in game one with a 2-of-2 showing at the plate while driving in a run and scoring three of her own, picking up her first run in the opening inning after reaching on a leadoff double before moving over to third on an Erin Stacevicz sacrifice bunt. Kaycee Carbone drove in Cozza with one out on a single to bring the score to 1-0 after one played.
The runs kept coming for the Minutewomen in the next two frames as they put nine on the scoreboard to go ahead 10-0 after three played. Kaitlyn Stavinoha recorded her first of two hits in the second inning before Riley Gregoire drove her in with her first RBI of the season. Three more runs came into score on Saint Louis' third error of the second inning, ending with some slick base-running by Stacevicz to bring the count to 5-0.
Gregoire plated the first run of the third inning with the bases loaded prior to a Cozza RBI single up the middle that drove in one and scored another on a Billiken error. Melissa Garcia finished the game with a pair of hits on three credited ad-bats, driving in two on a RBI single for the final runs of game one.
Meg Colleran tossed four innings of three-hit softball as she moved to a perfect 5-0 in league play with a sub-one earned run average, walking just one while striking out four before Quinn Breidenbach shut things down in the top half of the fifth to keep Saint Louis (21-20 Overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) scoreless.
Game Two – UMass 4, Saint Louis 0 - Box Score
Runs were at a premium in game two of the doubleheader as both teams combined for just three hits in the opening three innings before the Minutewomen tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the win.
Kiara Oliver tossed a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits in seven innings of work to move to 12-3 on the year in the circle. Oliver picked up three strikeouts, working out of multiple jams to leave eight Saint Louis base-runners stranded in game two.
Stavinoha got things going for the Minutewomen with two outs in the fifth inning, sending a shot over the wall in right field for her first home run of the season to break the scoreless tie on her way to finishing the day 4-of-6 at the plate.
Cozza tacked one three more after Hannah Bunker reached on a walk and Gregoire singled, hitting her 12th home run of the season just inside of the foul pole out in right field to bring the score to a final 4-0.
Garcia posted another multi-hit game in the doubleheader as she went 3-of-3 at the plate in game two to finish the day with five hits in six at-bats.
The Minutewomen and the Billikens are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with game three at noon on Sortino Field.
