Softball Collects Road Win at Boston College

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (20-19, 8-3 Atlantic 10) defeated Boston College (24-18, 8-6 ACC), 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon in Chestnut Hill. A scoreless game through four innings, the Minutewomen scored two runs in the top of the fifth as the Eagles were only able to answer back with one run in the bottom of the frame, leaving seven runners on base in total.
Junior Meg Colleran started in the circle and pitched seven innings, earning her 12th win of the season. She gave up just one run and spread out five hits as she fanned seven batters.
Freshman Madison Gimpl walked to open the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Candace Denis singled to advance Gimpl to third. Sophomore Erin Stacevicz's sacrifice fly drove in Gimpl. With Denis on second, sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha doubled to drive in the winning run.
Denis extended her hitting streak to nine-straight games, going two-for-three at the plate. Stavinoha extended her hitting streak to five games, also going two-for-three. She leads the club in multi-hit games with 11. Stacevicz was one-for-two and stole her 16th base of the season.
The Eagles scored on an infield single and subsequent throwing error in their half of the fifth inning. They left three runners on base in the bottom of the sixth and an additional runner on base in the bottom of the seventh.
Massachusetts will face Saint Joseph's (18-20, 9-3 A-10) in a three-game series this weekend. Games are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday with the weekend finale at 12 p.m. Sunday.
