Minutewomen Sweep Hawks, Take A-10 Lead

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (22-19, 10-3 Atlantic 10) picked up two wins at Saint Joseph's (18-22, 9-5 A-10) on Sunday, April 23. The Minutewomen now lead the league standings with two weekends of competition remaining.
Game One
UMass defeated Saint Joseph's, 1-0, in game one of the doubleheader. The teams got through nearly three innings of action on Saturday before the contest was postponed to Sunday. Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched a complete game shutout, earning her 13th win of the season. She struck out two batters and only gave up three hits.
A run in the bottom of the third gave UMass the 1-0 lead. Singles from freshman Candace Denis and sophomore Erin Stacevicz put runners in scoring position for Jena Cozza's at bat. She singled to drive in Denis, the only run of the game.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha and senior Tara Klee also picked up a singles against the Hawks.
Game Two
The Minutewomen bested the Hawks, 3-1, in game two on Sunday. Colleran started again in the circle and earned herself yet another win, striking out two batters and giving up five hits. She now sits at 14-9 on the season with 17 complete games, three shutouts and an ERA of 2.57.
UMass took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Stavinoha reached on a single to left field with one out. Cozza, going 3-for-3 at the plate, drove her in with her second home run of the season. A single from Cozza opened the top of the sixth inning and sophomore Kaycee Carbone drove her home on a sacrifice fly. A run by the Hawks in the bottom of the sixth brought the score to 3-1.
UMass will host Connecticut on Tuesday (4 p.m.) and Boston College on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
