Matt Cence (2 goals, 1 assist) led the UMass offense, Thomas Wadas scores first career goal

AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (3-0-1) continued its blazing start to the 2025 campaign, recording its first clean sheet against Stonehill (1-3-0) in a 4-0 decision.

Matt Cence found his groove offensively, leading the Minutemen offense with two goals and one assist on the day. Freshman Thomas Wadas tallied his first collegiate goal off a free kick to start the scoring for UMass. Aidan Kelly tacked on another early season score, tying the team lead in goals with three thus far.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Minutemen came out of the gates aggressive, earning two corners in the opening four minutes of action.
  • Following a yellow card to Stonehill's Nathan Lagoa, Thomas Wadas netted his first career goal on a set piece shot that found the left side of the net.
  • Sean Fernandez-Davila tallied a shot on goal, forcing Finn Schueler to make his first save of the contest.
  • Wadas almost doubled the tally in the 27th minute, as a brief open-net attempt was corralled by Schueler.
  • Alex Geczy made his first save of the day in the 29th minute, as a strong attempt by Owen Burke to the top shelf was batted out of play.
  • Geczy would make another save shortly after, stopping the scoring chance by Shane Fonseca.
  • Matt Cence made his presence felt to open the second 45, finding Aidan Kelly off a corner for the heading score to make it a 2-0 game in the 48th minute.
  • Just 16 seconds later, Cence would intercept the Skyhawk possession and turn it into a breakaway score after beating the keeper one-on-one.
  • The Senior midfielder followed up with his first career brace, firing a shot into the left side of the net off the setup from Wadas.
  • Massachusetts would control possession for the remainder of regulation, earning three additional corners  and out-shooting Stonehill 5-2 in the final 39 minutes of action.
