Tennis Nipped By UConn In Tightly Contested Match

Doubles point proves deciding factor for Huskies after teams split singles play.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis dropped a tight 4-3 match to the University of Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon at the Mullins Tennis Courts. The two teams split the six singles matches making the doubles point the deciding factor in the hard-fought match between the programs.
The loss moved the Minutewomen to 10-5 overall this year, and marked the first home loss, since UMass began its 16-straight home victories on February 12, 2022.
UConn picked up the opening point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Partners Thamonpan Jonglertrakul and Dylan Cannon earned a 6-2 win over Maria Constantinou and Doga Selen Takunyaci at court No. 3.
Danielle Hack tied up the match after grabbing the first Massachusetts point of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Aleksandra Karamyshev at No. 2 singles. Caroline Cook of UConn won 6-3, 6-4 over Cannon at No. 6 to give the Huskies the 2-1 lead. Mariya Krasakova brought the match to another draw at 2-2, defeating Isabel Petri Bere at court No. 3, 6-3, 6-2, but UConn's Cameron Didion pulled the Huskies ahead, notching a point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Anna Napadiy.
With two matches remaining, Jonglertrakul finished at No. 5 singles, securing the match tying point for UMass with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Denise Lai of UConn. After an intense three set battle on court No. 1, the Huskies secured the match point, as Constantinou took down Melisa Senli, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Massachusetts sets for a road match in Bronx, New York, as the Minutewomen resume Atlantic 10 competition against Fordham on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
