Tennis' Weekend Ends With Loss At Harvard

Minutewomen fall, 4-3 to Crimson
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis wrapped up its weekend with a 4-3 loss at Harvard on Sunday morning. Massachusetts fell to 2-2 overall with the loss while Harvard improved to 5-1.
"I am proud of our fight this weekend," head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "We showed ourselves that we belong with some of the best teams in the region. Now, we have to continue to work on the little things that will make the difference in the key moments of matches."
The Maroon and White dropped the doubles point as Rachel Lim and Jenna Friedel downed Janja Kovacevic and Jodie Lawrence-Taylor at No. 1 and Natasha Gonzalez and Chelsea Williams bested Martina Bocchi and Ashley Avery at No. 3.
Massachusetts rallied from its early deficit with wins in three of the first four finishing singles matches as the Minutewomen took victory at No. 1 (Kovacevic), No. 2 (Lawrence-Taylor) and No. 3 (Ruth Crawford).
Crawford worked quickly against Rachel Eason for a 6-3, 6-1 victory, which evened the match at 1-all. However, Williams followed with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Avery at No. 6 as Harvard moved back in front.
Massachusetts took a 3-2 advantage on the strength of back-to-back wins. Lawrence-Taylor downed Lim 6-3, 6-2 before Kovacevic tallied a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Friedel for the slim lead.
However, Harvard rallied back for the team win with match victories at No. 4 and No. 5. Irene Lu needed a pair of tiebreaker sets for a 7-6, 7-6 decision over Napadiy at No. 5 while Bocchi fought Gonzalez into the third set before Gonzalez took a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win.
UMass continues its spring season at Binghamton (0-5 overall) on Sat., Feb. 9. The match begins at 3:30 p.m.
