March 03, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse

Holly Turner scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds remaining.

STORRS, Conn. - The defense forced a pair of late turnovers and Holly Turner scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds to go as the No. 24 UMass women's lacrosse team defeated Connecticut 12-11 on Saturday afternoon at the Sherman Family Complex.

The Minutewomen (3-2) trailed 7-5 at halftime before notching the first three goals of the second half to take the lead nine minutes into the stanza. Both teams traded goals and leads from there with UConn (3-3) tying the game at 11-11 with 7:58 remaining in the game.

Kasey Keane forced a turnover with 74 seconds to go, but UMass turned the ball over in its offensive zone. The Huskies cleared the ball, but committed another turnover which was collected by goalie Lauren Hiller. That led to a 3-on-2 fast-break chance for the Minutewomen with Hannah Burnett finding Turner for the decisive tally.

Turner finished the game with three goals alongside Abby Walker to lead UMass. Kaitlyn Cerasi and Hannah Burnett each had four points on two goals and two assists. Stephanie Croke (assist, 4 groundballs) and Kiley Anderson both had goals as well. Hiller finished the game with 11 saves. Keane led the defense with three caused turnovers and five groundballs.

UConn was led by Olivia Miles who had a game-high five goals. Grace Nolan finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Sydney Watson also had two goals.

Overall, the Huskies held a 37-to-31 advantage in shots, while UMass finished with a slight 24-to-23 edge in groundballs. UConn won 13 draws, while UMass controlled 12. Both teams were aggressive on the ride as Connecticut completed 13-of-22 clears and UMass was held to 15-of-25.

UMass will have a week off between games before taking on Ohio State at Albright College in Reading, Pa., next Sunday, March 11.
