Leidel Powers Minutewomen Past UTRGV

November 20, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Junior co-captain posts 28 points, career-high 13 rebounds in 74-70 victory

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball junior Hailey Leidel had her first career double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds as the Minutewomen rallied from a 10-point deficit en route to a 74-70 win over UT Rio Grande Valley at the Mullins Center on Tuesday night. Leidel now sits just four points from reaching the 1,000-career point milestone.

The result also improves the Maroon and White to 3-1 on the season while UTRGV is now 2-3.

UMass shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the floor and the Vaqueros were 37.5 percent (24-of-63) on the night. UTRGV was outstanding from 3-point land in the first half with a 9-of-13 clip, but cooled off in the second half to a 1-of-13 line from downtown in the final 20 minutes.

Not to be lost in the shuffle were 10 assists on the night by Bre Hampton-Bey, also a single-game best. The sophomore turned in 18 points, joining Leidel and redshirt freshman Anil Soysal (12) with double-figure scoring.

A back-and-forth first quarter saw seven lead changes as the sides battled for breathing room. Idil Türk had nine points on a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, helping the Vaqueros ultimately take a 40-32 lead into halftime.

But the second half took on a vastly different nature as Hampton-Bey spearheaded a third quarter scoring with 10 points. Leidel had 19 of her 28 points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter. She put down 12 straight points for Massachusetts to turn a 58-57 deficit with 7:08 left in regulation into a 69-60 advantage with 3:52 left.

For UTRGV, Türk finished with 12 points.

Massachusetts now breaks briefly for the Thanksgiving holiday and travels to the three-day Brown University Turkey Tip-off from Nov. 23-25 in Providence, Rhode Island. Tournament action begins on Fri., Nov 23 when the Minutewomen face Bucknell in a 6 p.m. game.
