Minutewomen Fall to Bearcats in Maryland Invitational
March 19, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite three hits from freshman Erin Stacevicz, University of Massachusetts softball fell to Binghamton, 4-2, Saturday morning. The Minutewomen fall to 6-15 on the season.
The Minutewomen led North Dakota State through three innings but the second game of UMass' Saturday doubleheader was halted due to rain. The game will be resumed on Sunday from the time of the postponement.
Game One
Massachusetts scored two runs in the third inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Stacevicz led the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Taylor Carbone. Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza then reached on an error, scoring Stacevicz on the play. Cozza advanced to third after the error and scored when freshman Kaitlyn Stavinoha singled through the left side.
Binghamton tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs in the sixth to gain the lead. Two straight singles with the bases loaded put the Bearcats out in front.
Sophomore Meg Colleran earned the decision in the circle, throwing four innings and allowing just one earned run. She allowed six hits and struck out one, not allowing a walk.
Game Two
UMass scored two runs in the first inning to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Stacevicz led the game off with a bunt single and later scored after Cozza singled up the middle and the ball was misplayed by the Bison defense. Cozza would score herself after senior Olivia Godin got held up in a rundown just long enough for the runner to cross the plate.
The game was halted in the fourth inning after NDSU got runners on first and second base. For continued coverage of UMass softball, follow the team on Twitter (@UMassSoftball), Instagram (@UMassSBall) and on Facebook at facebook.com/UMass-Softball.
