Captains Carry W. Soccer To 2-1 Win At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UMass women's soccer team kept its winning streak alive on Friday night, using goals from both of its captains to pick up a 2-1 road win over Charlotte. With the victory, the squad's sixth straight, the Minutewomen have matched their win total from 2010, now sitting at 8-2-1 on the season. In Atlantic 10 play, UMass is now 2-0-0, after picking up its first win over the 49ers (3-7-3, 0-2-0 A-10) since 2005.
UMass struck early, scoring on just its second shot of the game in the 13th minute. Senior Meghan Collins headed a ball across to fellow senior co-captain Deanna Colarossi on the left side of the goal that Colarossi brought down and tapped home for her fourth goal of the season.
Then in the 30th minute, Charlotte managed to net the equalizer, bringing UMass' streak of shutout minutes to an end at 481:10. A 49ers' free kick set up a shot by Sarah Ann Waugh in traffic that was stopped by Minutewomen goalkeeper Emily Cota, but the rebound came to Oni Bernard who knocked it in at 29:50.
In the second half, the UMass defense held strong, including six saves by Cota who finished the evening with eight stops. Collins eventually put the Minutewomen back on top off a restart as she headed in a cross from freshman Tori Sousa in the 78th minute.
Charlotte ended the contest with a 14-11 advantage in shots and led in corner kicks, 6-5. Fouls were 14-10 against UMass. In net for the 49ers, Natalie Lavigne stopped four of six shots the Minutewomen placed on target.
UMass will conclude the weekend road trip on Sunday, Oct. 9, with a match at Saint Louis at 2 p.m.
