MSOC: Season Ends With 2-2 Draw At Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - After Bryant Craft and Ben Arikian gave UMass a two-goal second half lead, Saint Louis tallied a pair of goals with under 20 minutes left in regulation to force a 2-2 double overtime draw with the UMass men's soccer team at Hermann Stadium.
The tie forced UMass into a 3-way tie for the sixth-seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament, but the Minutemen fell a point shy of Xavier in the tie-breaking scenarios to finish the year in seventh.
UMass and Xavier stood tied with Fordham for the sixth and final spot in the league tournament with 15 points. Each team had a 1-1 record against each other forcing the tie-breaking scenario to go to record against common opponents (La Salle, Dayton, and Rhode Island). Xavier had six points against those teams, while UMass had five and Fordham three giving the Musketeers the final slot.
The Minutemen finish the 2010 season with a 5-5-8 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Louis finished the regular season with a 8-6-3 overall record and a 5-3-1 record in the A-10.
After a scoreless first half on Sunday, the tempo picked up in the second frame where all four goals were scored.
Craft scored his 7th goal of the season in the 63rd minute after a pretty cross from Stuart Amick. Amick slotted his pass from the left flank of the 18-yard box to Craft who made a run through the middle to the six-yard box catch SLU keeper Mark Pais out of position.
In the 68th minute, Ben Arikian scored his second goal of the season on a shot from the right side of the box giving UMass a 2-0 lead.
On Senior Day, however, the Billikens stormed back with goals from Alex Johnston and Sito Sasieta in the 74th and 80th minutes, respectively, to force overtime.
UMass carried the play in both overtime periods, but could not find the game-winning goal.
The Minutemen finished with a 19-to-12 advantage in shots including a 5-to-0 mark in the first overtime. UMass also earned 7 corners to just 1 for Saint Louis in the match.
Chris Piekos made four saves including a spectacular diving one towards the right post in the final moments of regulation to force the overtime periods. Pais made six for Saint Louis.
The match marks the end of the collegiate careers for four seniors: Amick, Arikian, Chris Vaccaro and Piekos.
Amick played in 79 career matches with 9 goals and 5 assists for 23 points. Arikian, one of the top midfielders to don the Maroon & White, played in 82 matches with 11 career goals and 23 assists for 45 points. Vaccaro played in 79 matches with 1 goal and 4 assists. Piekos played three seasons for UMass after walking on to the team in 2008. He played in 26 matches (2,544 minutes) posting a career 0.81 goals against average, an .848 save percentage and a 8-7-10 overall record with 9 shutouts.
