    Happy Friday The 13th! And, and early Happy Valentine's Day wish to everyone. Welcome back to Just Take A Minute. Lots of preview stories for the weekend edition as many UMass teams are in action. Friday night its hockey at home vs. No. 3 Northeastern. Saturday its the men's lacrosse season opener vs. Sacred Heart at 1p.m. at Garber Field. Later that day its women's basketball at Mullins vs. Duquesne. Saturday night the men's hoop squad plays at St. Bonaventure and the hockey squad plays at Northeastern. JTAM has info on all these teams along with some high praise from an ESPN college basketball analyst who think UMass can make noise in the A-10 Tournament.

  • If you were watching the wild end to the Temple-Saint Joseph's game on ESPN2 (The Owls held on 61-59), you heard ESPN's Hubert Davis say he thought five team could win the A-10 men's basketball tournament. In addition to frontrunners Xavier, Saint Joe's, Temple and Dayton, he cited UMass. Davis went on to talk about how much talent UMass has with Chris Lowe, Ricky Harris and Tony Gaffney. He talked about the transition with new coach Derek Kellogg and how the Minutemen may be primed for a long run in the A-10s.

  • The New York Post has a feature story on UMass' Chris Lowe who was solid in his final regular-season game in the New York metro area at Fordham on Wednesday night. Lowe needs eight assists to become the all-time UMass leader.

    What a Wednesday for UMass basketball! First, the Minutewomen pulled off the impressive upset win over A-10 power Temple in front of 3,781 screaming fans on Field Trip Day. Then in the evening, the Minutemen jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 91-68 win at Fordham. Be sure to join us at the Hangar tonight at 7 p.m. for the Bud Light UMass Basketball Show as both teams look back to great wins and ahead to Saturday's games. This JTAM is basketball focused but includes much more, with stories on women's lacrosse, skiing, and more!

       Wednesday, Feb. 11

    Field Trip Day is here! At 11:45 a.m. today, the women's basketball team hosts A-10 rival Temple at the Mullins Center. 3,000 children from more than 30 area schools are expected to be on hand for what is sure to be a loud and raucous atmosphere. Prior to the game, the UMass Sports Luncheon takes place at an early 11 a.m. start in the Massachusetts Room at the Mullins Center. Hockey coach Toot Cahoom will speak and well as softball coach Elaine Sortino, who will award the Athlete of the Week to Brandice Balschmiter. Tonight, the men's team plays at Fordham at 7 p.m.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of the women's basketball game against Temple this morning. The paper also has a sidebar on what UMass needs to do to have a chance against the Owls, who have won four games in a row.

  • The softball team's rise in the polls is covered in the Daily Hampshire Gazette. UMass jumped from No. 24 to 18 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll and from unranked to No. 22 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

  • The Brockton Enterprise has a nice feature on UMass senior hockey star Cory Quirk, who's career with the Minutemen is winding down.

  • Jennifer Toland of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette has a story on track star Lisa Wilson in her column.

  • Here are preview of tonight's UMass-Fordham men's basketball game from the Bronx: Springfield Republican, Daily Hampshire Gazette and Daily Collegian.

       Tuesday, Feb. 10

    Tuesday features one UMass team in action as the 3-0 tennis squad faces a challenge at defending America East Champion Boston University. The Bud Light UMass Hockey Show is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at the Hangar so be sure to stop by and hear Coach Cahoon preview the big home-and-home weekend with Northeastern (who lost in the Beanpot Finals on Monday night). This JTAM is highlighted by one of Cahoon's former players who received a prestigious National Hockey League honor on Monday.

  • Believe it or not, lacrosse season is here! The Minutemen open their season on Saturday vs. Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. On Monday, the USILA men's lacrosse poll was released and UMass comes in fourth in "Others Receiving Votes." Also of note, the two teams that the Minutemen beat in preseason exhibitions, Drexel and Army, are ahead of them in the others receiving votes category. UMass is set to play six teams currently in the top 20 this season: Syracuse (1), Georgetown (7), Hofstra (13), Brown (14), Loyola (17), and Albany (18) along with Penn State (RV), and Harvard (RV).

  • What a Saturday night for Mass Attack alums! Matt Anderson scored Chicago's first goal and assisted on the second (the eventual game-winning goal) in the Wolves' 2-1 win over Milwaukee. What made it extra special was that it was against the Admirals who feature two UMass alums, Mark Matheson and Stephen Werner. Anderson was named the game's first star.

  • How about UMass hockey alum Jon Quick? He was named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Monday after stopping 95 of 100 shots last week in leading the Los Angeles Kings to three straight road wins and to within three points of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Quick was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week earlier this season. The Canadian Press also has this feature story about Quick's emergence in the L.A. net.

       Monday, Feb. 9

    Welcome back to Just Take A Minute on Monday! Sunday was a great day for UMass fans and alums as close to 30 members of the 1990s men's basketball decade were on hand for their celebration as part of the 100 Seasons Of UMass Basketball. The biggest ovations came for Edgar Padilla, Dana Dingle and Mike Williams. JTAM has stories on the men's hoop loss to Saint Joseph's as well as hockey's defeats to Boston College and UMass Lowell this weekend. The softball team opened the year with a 4-1 weekend down in Boca Raton keyed by a 1-0 win over No. 5 Michigan.

  • Here are stories on the players from the 1990s Celebration on Sunday. Ron Chimelis has a great story on many of the legends who returned the Mullins Center for Sunday's celebration. The story focuses on Mike Williams and many of the other greats. UMass alum Dan Duggan filed this story in the Boston Herald.   • UMass alum Jeff Howe wrote a great feature over the weekend for InsideCollegeHockey.com on head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, his recruiting success over the years, and the impact of players like Thomas Pock, Greg Mauldin, Jon Quick, James Marcou, and Casey Wellman. "We're a much different program, just as a result of growth and development," Cahoon said of the comparison between 2000 and 2009. "We still have some elite players, but the strength of this program has been built from the bottom up where we're just deeper, more solid, from our fourth line through our third line, from our seventh or eighth defenseman right through our fourth defenseman. We're much better at that end. What we need to do is be able to find a couple more spectacular players that can take us over the top."
