AMHERST, Mass. - The Minutewomen came out strong in Thursday's afternoon match against the UConn Huskies. The Minutewomen (2-0) jumped ahead, winning all three doubles matches and securing the first point. They then went on to dominate in the first three matches, earning them the win, 4-3. The Minutewomen have not lost to UConn (1-1) since 2002, and they kept their winning streak alive today.
UMass showed its strength in doubles, breezing through UConn in all three matches. Sophomore Magdalena Ploch showcased her impeccable hands and reaction time, at No. 2 doubles, with some amazing rallies at the net. Senior Maude Lecluyse was on her doubles game, serving well, moving in and attacking the net. All of the UMass women were attacking the net in Thursday's match, and UConn was unable to come up with an answer.
At No. 1 doubles Lecluyse and Candynce Boney defeated UConn's LaRusso and Campitiello, 8-4. At No. 2 Ploch and newcomer Julia Comas defeated Emily Herb and Lauren Wilmarth, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles Tanisha Hodgson and Kaitlyn Carpenter defeated Alexa Gregory and Abby Mckeon, 8-4.
Continuing her success at No. 1 singles Ploch defeated senior Kelley LaRusso, 6-1, 6-3. Ploch played consistent tennis, hitting her shots, and making LaRusso work. LaRusso in the end was unable to keep up with Ploch's hard pace of hitting. At No. 2 singles freshman Julia Comas was all business against her opponent, hitting her shots from the get-go. Emily Herb was unable to keep up with Comas falling 6-1, 6-1. Comas continues to impress UMass fans with her style and skill of play. At No. 3 singles team veteran Candynce Boney defeated her opponent, Campitiello, 6-3, 6-1.
UMass' No.'s 4-6 singles fought hard against UConn yet were unable to come up with wins. The closest match of the day came at No. 5 with Kailtyn Carpenter falling 10-8 in a third set tiebreak to Alexa Gregory. Gregory won the match, 1-6, 6-1, 10-8.
The Minutewomen return to action next Wednesday (Oct. 14) at 2 p.m. when they will host the University of Rhode Island. The match will take place at the Mullins Courts on the UMass campus.
