PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In it's final match before entering Atlantic 10 play, the UMass women's soccer team fell to Providence by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon. The setback, which was the first for the Minutewomen since the team's Aug. 24 season opener at Binghamton (2-1, OT), leaves UMass at 3-2-2, while the Friars move to 5-2 on the year.

The lone goal of the contest came at 22:53 as Jill Camburn of Providence had a shot deflect in for her second of the season, one of 11 attempts the Friars managed in the opening period.

The Minutewomen controlled play in the second half and had sustained pressure around the box, earning five corner kicks, but were unable to net an equalizer. Freshman Lindsey DiOrio, sophomore Therese Smith and freshman Natalie Muka all placed shots on target in the final 15 minutes, but had them turned aside by Providence goalkeeper Jill Schott, who finished the match with four saves.

"We came out a little timid in the first half and Providence was able to capitalize," said UMass Head Coach Jim Rudy. "In the second half, we battled hard and dominated play, but unfortunately were unable to find the back of the net."

The Friars totaled 17 shots to the Minutewomen's seven and UMass goalkeeper Lauren Luckey logged 10 saves on the afternoon. Corner kicks were 7-2 in favor of the Minutewomen, while fouls were 11-1 against Providence.

UMass will begin conference play this coming Friday, Sept. 26, when the squad will play host to St. Bonaventure at 12 p.m. on Rudd Field.
