Tennis Shuts Out UConn, 7-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts tennis team (1-0) lost just one set all day in a 7-0 shutout of Connecticut Wednesday afternoon at the Upper Boyden Courts. Junior Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with freshman Stephanie Gimenez (Alphaville, Brazil).
The match began with the Minutewomen winning the doubles point. At No. 1, Spiess and Gimenez defeated Christine Burek and BreAnn Cheung, 8-3. The closest match of the day came in No. 2 doubles. Senior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.) and senior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) teamed up to beat UConn's Jaclyn Shapiro and Elizabeth Dibbs 10-8 in a tiebreaker. At No. 3 doubles, senior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Carly Ludmer (Demarest, N.J.) beat Ashley Petruzzi and Jessica Porter, 8-6.
Spiess set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Burek. At No. 2, sophomore Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) beat UConn's Shapiro 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1. At No. 3, Iwanowicz defeated Porter, 6-3, 6-1, while Gimenez knocked off Dibbs at No. 4, 6-4. 6-0. Bartoloni beat Cheung at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-4. No. 6 singles featured the closest match of the day as Johnson beat Alison Koch, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday when they host Middlebury at 3:00 PM.
