Women's Tennis Falls To UConn, 6-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team fell to UConn, 6-1, this afternoon at the Upper Boyden Courts. The Minutewomen are now 1-1 on the season.
With senior Lindsey Gillooly (Stoughton, Mass.) out with an injury and freshman Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) not in action, the Minutewomen needed to sweep the doubles and take four out of five singles matches in order to win the match. Since there are currently five players on roster, UMass was forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) played a tough match, but came up just short in the end to Trinell Russel and Whitney Simcik of UConn, 6-8. At No. 2, senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) won their match easily, 8-1.
Price was the lone Minutewoman to record a singles victory as she swept by Trinell Russel (6-0, 6-0).
The Minutewomen will host crosstown rival Amherst College tomorrow at the Upper Boyden Courts. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
