AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts scored two goals in the final two minutes of the game to earn a 4-4 tie with No. 12 Colgate in hockey action tonight at the Mullins Center.

With UMass trailing Colgate 4-2 late in the third period, head coach Don Cahoon pulled Minuteman starting goaltender Markus Helanen to get an extra attacker on the ice. UMass moved to within a goal when sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored from just outside the crease. Sophomore Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the goal.

UMass tied the game with seven seconds remaining in regulation. Senior captain Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) won a faceoff back to S?derholm who quickly passed it to junior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) who fired it passed Colgate goaltender Jason Lefevre.

Colgate opened the scoring in the first period when Sean Nolan scored a power play goal a little over two minutes into the game. The Minutemen tied it up when Miljko scored a power play goal with assists going to sophomore Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) and senior Joey Culgin (Framingham, Mass.).

The two teams traded goals in the second period with freshman Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) scoring the UMass goal. Senior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) assisted on the goal.

Colgate opened a 4-2 lead with two goals in the third period. Kevin Johns and Chad MacDonald scored the Red Raiders goals.

The tie improves the Minutemen to 0-2-1 on the season, while Colgate is now 1-1-2.

The Minutemen return to action on Friday, Oct. 27, in the Hockey East opener against Merrimack at the Mullins Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
